BM-SO-318 Biedermeier Box, Mahogany, Burlwood, Oak, Inlays, South Germany circa 1840

Description

Beautiful, high-quality late Biedermeier casket box from southern Germany, circa 1840.

  • Mahogany and (probably walnut) burl wood veneer on oak and maple.
  • Numerous inlays in maple and ebony, including a surrounding meander band and a finely inlaid octagonal star in the center of the lid and quarter stars in the corners.
  • Inside in oak at the bottom with two small removable drawers.
  • A mirror is inserted on the inside of the lid, with a surrounding gold-plated frame.
  • Original functional lock with side barbs.
  • Restored condition, shellac finish, polished. Lid slightly warped, causing the latch to not lock properly.
